Enrico Bertelli and David Ibbett

Description:
The Harmonic Drum Kit

E-percussionist Enrico Bertelli and electroacoustic composer David Ibbett
present their work on advanced pitch and harmony manipulation in midi
drumming.

In an interactive presentation, bridging seminar with live performance, the
duo will demonstrate their passion for injecting complex melodic and harmonic
structures into percussive music via audio programming techniques.

Beginning with the concept of a modal randomiser (a pad's signal is randomly
'scaled' into modal harmony) we will expand into methods of pitch control via
live interaction with another performer. Our presentation will explore tools
for unlocking both vertically and linearly conceived harmony for the
electronics drummer.

Using a set of custom m4l patches, we aim to demonstrate an exciting new
performance practice on hybrid instruments, merging the specifics of the
percussive gestures with the evolving colours of chromatic harmony.

Description:
Experimental Communication

Recent studies have shown that the electrical resistance in soil above a buried carcass has a different electrical resistivity to that of near by soil due to the decomposition of bodily tissue. The body leaves a “real”, quantifiable electrical trace when it is dead.

Following this idea that traces of the dead can be measured via electricity it may be possible that these traces can be found elsewhere such as in the electromagnetic field. Building on the work of The Scole Experimental Group construction of various electronic devices which apparently enhance the possibility of communication with spirits both audibly and visibly will be undertaken.

This session will most probably focus on the Transdimensional Communication Receptor and other crystal amplification devices. All present are welcome to join the communication session in the pub.

Search Narcissus by Phil Jones and Aharon

http://searchnarcissus.net/

Narcissus is an algorithm for ranking search results which deprioritises those results which are deemed "too popular". It is an artistic response to the prevalence of "positive feedback" mechanisms on the web, which prioritise popularity: hence Google finds pages which you already know, Twitter recommends that you follow existing celebrities, and Facebook invites you to like exactly what your friends already like.

In contrast, Narcissus helps you to find the "shadows" - the surprising, quirky and rejected - by deliberately hiding results that you or your peers are showing too much interest in.

Phil and Aharon will present the ideas and workings of the algorithm.
